One of the most important and widely used culinary ingredients across the world today is Sugar. It is an inseparable part of our life and people of all ages, body types, race, religion, and demographics are craving for it. As of today, an average person consumes about 25 kilograms of sugar each year; 10 kilograms more in industrialized nations. Leading international brands such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola also use ordinary sugar as the primary sweetening agent in their drink.


A high-end “fine spice”, sugar is native of India. By the 19th century, sugar became one of the most essential and bulk commodity used by everyone. Sugar is produced predominantly from sugar beet, an annual plant, and sugarcane, a perennial grass.

With the rapid development of science and the global economic status, sugar receives heavy competition from high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners manufacturers. The other commonly used additives include cyclamate, stevia, aspartame, and sucralose. The advantages of these artificial sweeteners are cost and lack of calories.

Given its impact on history and modern economy, with more than two thousand years of metamorphosing food, sugar has managed to establish itself as the most significant food ingredient even today.
